This agricultural building for storing free-range egg laying poultry manure has recently been completed in Hampshire.  The building has been designed to accommodate up to 9 months of manure from a flock of 32,000 birds.

Proven by a Structural Engineer, the structural steel work (fabricated to BS EN 1090-2 – Execution Class II and hot dipped galvanised to: BS EN ISO 1461:2009) consists of six steel portal frames spaced at 6.096m (20’) centres and increasing stanchion depths to allow for the 2.000m fall from the front to the back of the building.  Two gable posts situated in each end of the building, with roof & vertical bracings in both end bays, and eaves ties fitted to all bays.

Tanalised timber rails fitted to side elevations and both gables (less a 6.500 x 5.000m opening on front gable) with 32mm deep box profile steel cladding (0.5mm thick steel substrate coated with 25-30 microns ‘hi-build’ external Polyester topcoat in Juniper Green) installed to enclose the elevations level with 145mm precast concrete panels fitted on the inside face of the stanchions along both side elevations and the back gable. Varying panel depths allow for the fall of the floor creating a 3.000m high wall at the back gable.

The building features a Natural Grey Profile 6 fibre cement roof fixed to tanalised timber purlins on a 12.50° pitch complete with closed ridge piece and 0.7mm barges to match the side cladding.

Rainwater goods consist of 2mm thick galvanized box gutter to both elevations with two outlets per run connected to 110mm black plastic downpipe down to finished floor level.

The building including the groundwork cost £120K plus VAT.  The project qualified for a grant to cover manure which realised a sum of £35K, bringing the total project cost to £85K plus VAT.

The building (steel frame and concrete panels) excluding groundworks cost £76K plus VAT.
