Project Overview

Jaques was commissioned to deliver two Soil Association-certified organic laying hen houses in Hampshire, each designed to accommodate 3,000 birds. The project also included a centralised egg packing and storage facility, complete with an amenity block and robust biosecurity measures.

Design & Construction

The two buildings are clear span steel-framed structures, naturally ventilated to promote optimal airflow and bird welfare. Each house features large, insulated side wall vent doors fitted with wild bird protection mesh. These are operated via a rack and pinion system, ensuring smooth and reliable ventilation control.

To safeguard against extreme heat, a large belt-driven fan was installed in each gable end, providing additional airflow when required.

Soil Association Compliance

In line with Soil Association organic standards, the buildings were designed with twice the required number of pop-hole doors. This allows for rotational use of the outdoor range, enabling ground to be rested between flocks and maintaining soil health and bird welfare.

Sustainable Features

Rainwater from the roofs is collected via galvanised eaves beam gutters, which directs water as needed for sustainable site management.

Internal Fit-Out

All internal equipment, including the nest system and egg packing line, was supplied and installed by Jansen UK, ensuring high standards of functionality and efficiency.

A temperature-controlled egg store was added to maintain egg quality, alongside an amenity area featuring a toilet, shower, and rest room/kitchen for staff comfort and hygiene.
